From Consumer to Connoiseur: Convert Your Stubborn Friend to Craft Beer in 3 Easy Steps

August 15, 2017/in Journeys /by Kevin Wiens

In a city like Vancouver, craft beer is always on tap. So it is such a shame to see your one friend who insists on drinking their usual cheap beer. Let’s call this friend, Carl.

Carl is 26 and has been a steady Budweiser guy since high school house parties. You, Carl’s best friend, love experiencing the tastes and joy a good craft beer provides. It disappoints you that your friendship with Carl will not reach its full potential. Well, worry no more because your friends at VanCity Drinks are here to help. Here are our 3 tips on converting your friend to craft beer in Vancouver.

1. Take Your Friend on a Surprise Brewery Tour

There is no better way to acquire new tastes than by trying a mixture of IPAs, light and dark beers. If you start light with some lagers and summer ales your friend will surely be drinking bitter IPAs by the end of the tour. Vancouver has no shortage of breweries that offer tours to individuals or groups. You could do the standard brewery tour, such as the R&B Brewing Company, which is one of Vancouver’s original micro breweries. Or, if you feel more daring try taking them on a 3-hour brewery driving tour by Vancouver Brewery Tours.

2. Participate in Patio Madness 2017! #patiomadness

Thousands of beer loving Vancouverites have already posted to Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook showing their love for their favourite patios. Already over 10,000 votes have been cast in an attempt to claim Vancouver’s best patio! Your friend will be so distracted by the beautiful views and great vibes, he won’t even notice you’ve swapped his Coors Light for a craft pilsner!

Or, a random picture such as..

3. Download the VanCity Drinks Mobile App

Your friend will have no reason to not try new craft beers with the mobile app in hand. Custom curated lists make it easy for you to find what you’re looking for. With categories such as, “Craft Cocktails”, “Happy Hours”, “Craft Beer” and “Date Night”, the VanCity Drinks app guides you through our sometimes-confusing city. If your friend is lazy, use the “near me” function to give you the closest options. Your friend now has no more excuses!

Ballin’ on a Budget in Yaletown

August 15, 2017/in Journeys, Vibes /by Kevin Wiens

Vancouverites, you’ve worked hard this week and are officially over the hump. The halfway point of the week has long been a time to let loose and shake off any workday stress. As such, there is no better way to spend your Wednesday than ballin’ on a budget in Yaletown. There is no better feeling than capitalizing on daily drink deals while roaming the Yaletown streets. Using the VanCity Drinks mobile app, we’ve generated an itinerary for you to help you get through the week and enjoy great drinks without breaking the bank.

Hapa Izakaya

1193 Hamilton Street

Hapa Izakaya cheers Sapporo Beers

Located at Davie and Hamilton Street, Hapa Izakaya is a quick walk from the Yaletown Canada Line skytrain station. Whether you work a typical 9-5 or sporadic shift work, the first stop will surely apply to you. On Wednesday’s, Hapa Izakaya offers pitches of Red Truck Ale for just $12 all day long. So, whether you are looking for a lunchtime break or a social evening, Hapa Izakaya has you covered.

The Parlour

1011 Hamilton Street

Wine at The Paulour Yaletown

Just over 200 meters past Hapa Izakaya is The Parlour, your best friend for drinking deals between 2pm-5pm. For those who enjoy breaking social norms, you can come in for 1oz shots of Fireball or Burt Reynolds for just $4. If 2pm-5pm does not fit your schedule, come in at any other time to enjoy a 6oz glass of Roaring 20s Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc all day long.

Per Se Social Corner

891 Homer Street

Drinks at Per Se Social Corner Yaletown

Last but not least is the Per Se Social Corner. Wednesday is the perfect day to grab a few friends and “get social” while grabbing some cold ones. If you’re like me, your Yaletown adventures often involve spending more than you should. If you hustle from the office, you can make it in time for their 3pm-6pm happy hour and get their feature beer, the Rosalinda Lager for just $4! We would recommend coupling your refreshing beer with some of their Pinche Chips (also $5).

Craft Beer Crawl – East Vancouver

April 3, 2017/in Journeys /by Ben McRae

If you find yourself suffering from seasonal affective disorder or you’re just plain sick of the rain, I urge you to fight back! Embrace your Canadian spirit, throw on a rain jacket and head to East Van for a craft beer crawl! A few friends and I recently travelled to the heart of East Van’s beer scene on Powell street. We were honoured to get to enjoy Vancouver’s newest craft brewery Andina Brewing Company!

Andina Brewing Company

Andina Brewing Company is a family owned brewery created by Nicolas and Andres Amaya. Andina permeates a Columbian inspired vibe with lively music and a contagious energy. The space has got a touch of the old world with a modern twist. The kind of place that feels familiar and puts you at ease.

craft beer crawl 1

We were lucky enough to grab a table and enjoy every beer that Andina offered! I always order a flight of tasters, it’s the best way to get a feel for the beer and the brewery. My favourite is the “Monita” which is a Blonde IPA. It’s balanced perfectly with a hoppy punch and a smooth finish. You have to try the Passionfruit IPA it’s unreal!

craft beer crawl 2

Andina also serves a South American inspired food menu with an amazing ceviche. Beats a pepperoni stick and cheese bread! All in all, I think Andina brings a new flare to Powell street and Vancouver’s craft beer scene. It is a must visit and is a great starting spot for a craft beer crawl. Up next Powell Brewery.

Powell Brewery

Keeping it all in the family, Powell Brewery is an independent microbrewery owned and operated by husband and wife team David (brewer) and Nicole (operator). Powell Brewery is East Van to the core with public seating onlooking their brewery. Shining stainless steel vats shimmering in the light make it look like you’ve died and gone to craft beer heaven! I love the laid-back Vancouver vibe and with a small space there’s no room for pretentious attitude. Just a group of locals who love enjoying craft beer with their friends.

craft beer crawl 3

Of course, we ordered a round of flights to get a feel for what Powell is currently offering. The Ode to Citra is a Powell classic and probably their most recognizable beer. If you’re a IPA lover you are in the right place. Powell brews aggressive yet delicious IPA’s as well as a fierce double IPA. Worth a visit and it’s literally a stone’s throw away from Andina which makes it an easy trek even despite the rain. Feeling hopped up on IPA’s we decided to cruise up Clark street to our last craft beer crawl destination in East Vancouver, Strange Fellows.

Strange Fellows Brewing

Strange Fellows’ beer embodies their name by being creative and innovative. I literally get excited every time I visit because they’re always brewing up tasty creations. Influenced by both old-world traditions and new age ingenuity, Strange Fellows manages to keep you guessing and satisfied. Boasting a massive tasting room overlooking their beautiful brewery, the space is attractive and lively. Public seating provokes an awesome social atmosphere as everyone is always having a good time at Strange Fellows. We sipped our flights down to the suds and reflected on our night of fun. By only visiting three breweries, you’ll have a great night and actually remember it! Watch out for those IPA’s, they’ll get you!

craft beer crawl 4

Vancouver’s craft beer scene is one of the best things to blossom in our beautiful city. Supporting locally crafted beer is not only good for our economy, it’s also a superior product. Put down that tall can of cheap American brew and experience our kick ass craft beer scene. I encourage everyone to head down to Powell street and go on a craft beer crawl journey that will educate, inspire, and of course intoxicate! Until next time…

Vancouver’s Best Weekend Happy Hours & Drink Specials

March 9, 2017/in Journeys, Vibes /by Bob Pember

We all have our favourite happy hour spots during the week. It’s not hard to find a pub or restaurant that’s helping the after-work crowd unwind with drink specials Monday to Friday. Once the weekend is here, we’re usually on our own in Vancouver as happy hours become few and far between.

Luckily, there are establishments that have made the decision to take care of your happy hour needs seven days a week. We’ve found some of these noble pubs and featured five of our favourite destinations for great drinks at great prices on Saturday and Sunday with Vancouver’s best weekend happy hours & drink specials.

Portland Craft

Main Street
Happy hour daily 3-5pm with $5 rotating US craft beers, $4 local draught, and $4 Jameson. $3.50 for any 12oz beer during lunch daily.

The taps at Portland Craft have something for even the pickiest craft beer palate.

Opening on Main Street as craft beer was about to explode in popularity, Portland Craft has been focused on bringing the best of Pacific Northwest breweries to the city for the last five years. They feature rotating taps from California, Oregon, and Washington, as well as local BC favourites. With new beers coming in each week, there’s always something new to try on happy hour (you can tell which ones are featured by the smiley faces on the menu board). They also have a daily lunch special where you can try a 12-ounce pour of any of their beers for 3.50.

The relaxed atmosphere (complete with no TVs) and welcoming staff make this an ideal choice for anyone looking to settle into a weekend afternoon properly. And when the lunch special ends, happy hour begins.

The Parlour is known for their signature pizzas and energetic atmosphere seven days a week as one of Yaletown’s hotspots. With a relaxed but classy vibe, it’s a local favourite that serves up a unique scene for lunch, dinner, and late-night mingling. Their daily drink specials are more than enough reason to stop in on their own. For happy hour, they pull out all the stops and feature all specials from 2 – 5 PM, even on the weekend. So whether you’re feeling like sipping on a Malbec, trying out a Mandarin Mule, or shooting straight fireball, the Parlour can accommodate any and all happy hour needs.

A Sunday classic – the Parlour’s double caesar.

Steamworks

Gastown
Happy hour for lunch each day until 2:30 PM with 2.75 Kolsch. Sangria for 5.99 (Saturdays) and Classic Caesars (doubles) for 6.99 (Sundays).

vancouver's best weekend happy hours 5

There’s always a pulse at Steamworks – you can rely on the atmosphere throughout the week.

A staple of Gastown and impossible to miss when walking through the neighbourhood, Steamworks has become an institution in Vancouver. It’s a postcard type of spot for a weekend lunch that lets you sit right across from the north shore mountains. They run their daily drink specials along with a lunchtime happy hour on the weekends. Kolsch (the featured beer) is “cheaper than pop” during lunch, which is music to our ears. The attached brewery means that their full range of beers is close at hand, and their menu is full of pub favourites and west coast specialties for refuelling on the weekends. The lively atmosphere and knowledgeable staff create a classic pub feel in the heart of the downtown scene.

Darby’s knows exactly how to serve up the ideal Kitsilano afternoon.

Over on West 4th, the longstanding Darby’s is providing specials for their visitors all weekend, along with a locally sourced brunch menu and 30 rotating taps to try. Their authentic pub atmosphere is great for enjoying pints and grub on a laid-back weekend day in Kits.
