Vancouver International Wine Festival 2017

February 25, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Daniel Cooper

Another successful Vancouver International Wine Festival took place this past weekend February 11th – 19th. Canada was the host country in honour of its 150th birthday this year. Nestled in among decorations of faux trees, complete with bark and deep green leaves, were wineries from across Canada.

vancouver international wine festival 2

The True North

Of special interest to me were the wines of the Ontario and Nova Scotia regions, which as a Vancouverite, I have never been able to experience before. The sometimes difficult Nova Scotian climate means the wineries there must grow a variety of grapes that I have never heard of before. They proved very interesting, but in my mind (and I fully admit to my home grown bias) BC was the real stand out. With three times as many wineries present as the rest of Canada, it was hard to find a wine I didn’t like. Special mention to Tight Rope wineries Pinot Noir, which for my money was one of the top BC wines of the night.

vancouver international wine festival 6

An International Affair

Of course you couldn’t call this an “international” wine festival without including wines from across the globe! France of course, offered an incredible array of wines, some of the best Bordeaux’s I have had the privilege of tasting. I was, however, a little surprised and disappointed by the lack of Burgundy wines in attendance, as they are some of the best France has to offer. Some surprises for me included some absolutely amazing wines from Argentina and Chile. I truly believe, especially for Chile, that over the next few years these will be the wines to watch.

vancouver international wine festival 7

The wine festival is always an amazing event. Whether you’re a master sommelier or a novice wine drinker more interested in price than the “bouquet”, it’s always a fun experience and even the French make wine tasting approachable for all. The ability to try wines from around the globe in one room is rare and can really take your understanding, enjoyment, and knowledge of wine to the next level in a fun and engaging way.

Like a fine wine, the Vancouver International Wine Festival gets a little better with each passing year and everyone will experience it a little differently, but always with the same effect… a healthy buzz.

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – La Terrazza

February 15, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Barry Felardeau

La Terrazza. Wow. A classic Italian restaurant that is just a 5-minute walk from the Yaletown Canada Line Station will immediately spark your senses as soon as you walk in. I was warmly greeted by Cooper and Brigitta at the door but not before the overall atmosphere took me over. With the slick cut bar front and centre, hand painted floors (hand painted floors guys, hand painted floors), a fireplace for the ages and the infamous “Wall of Wine.” I was starting to feel like this place which has been open for 19 years and has had the same 2 chefs & maître d’ running the place since day 1, was going to be a treat and a half. Boasting the second largest wine list in Canada (2500 to be exact \0/) and playing host to the likes of Future, Danny Glover, Snoop Dogg, Shakira, and the man himself Arnold Schwarzenegger, I was excited to indulge in the Dine Out 2017 menu at Yaletown’s Italian gem of a ristorante.

la terrazza 6

Wall of Wine

When Cooper asked, “Dining room, lounge or bar?”, and I said you do you; man I’ll tell ya, he did him. With a cozy seat in the lounge by the window I couldn’t help but notice the mix of clientele ranging from a 7-figure-making-regular at the bar to a younger couple out for date night.  A place for all with the décor, music, and vibe making a very nice and relaxing setting. After confessing that I’m not really a wine guy but have been interested in the game for a bit, he quickly and confidently poured me the Charles Sparr Riesling and the Marrenon Chardonay. Two good entry level wines in terms of a palate as Cooper put it that gives you a really good insight towards the diverse world of wine. Both first sips made me excited for the next and boy oh boy I think I converted right then and there. Crazy how discrete but at the same time distinct a wine can be.

la terrazza 8

la terrazza 1

Time To Dine

After another “you do you moment” Cooper mixed me up a negroni, a classic apéritif, and when done right is immaculate; and immaculate it was. Paired with the insalata d’anatra, a duck confit topped with a heritage mix, dried fig, Tallagio, pistachios, and a champagne verjus, an amazing appetizer that was featured on the Dine Out 2017 menu.

la terrazza 4

la terrazza 5

I was just excited about the entrée though; the Strozzapreti Bolognese which is also Chef Gennaro’s Grandmother’s recipe. A home run of a pasta with tomato, a meat ragu, and some parmigiano reggiano -another La Terrazza classic that out of towners are known to have on their must have list whenever they’re in VanCity.

la terrazza 3

For dessert I had a crispy cheesecake. Yeah that’s right, a crispy cheesecake, and it was amazing. La Creazione as they call it, a white chocolate cheesecake wrapped in phyllo pastry with amarena cherries and strawberry coulis was a very nice end to the 2017 Dine Out Menu at La Terrazza, and was I blown away.

la terrazza 2

One of a Kind

With their bi-annual menu change it was good to get a good overall look at the menu at such a classic but still unique venue. Classic drinks, that 2500 wine list that’s conveniently on an ipad, amazing food, genuine and kind staff all around. The list goes on for La Terrazza, a ristorante that has definitely gained a new fan. Genuineness goes a long way, and Brigitta and Cooper have hit that right on the nail. An established fine dining place with some definite bragging rights. “Family is family,” Brigitta said and that shined for sure during my experience there. A new restaurant has been put on your to do list to check out. Please do.

North City Growlers

February 9, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Ben McRae

In a recent quest to find a custom growler to celebrate the launching of our new and improved VanCity Drinks App, I stumbled upon North City Growlers. Based out of Winnipeg, North City is pushing the boundaries when it comes to the custom growler game. They boast a collection of growlers that will satisfy any beer nerd’s wildest whim! All hand etched by the creator and self-proclaimed craft beer lover, Daivin Macdonald.

north city growlers 3

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Daivin to pick his brain about his inspiration, managing a business while raising a family, and the intense process behind customizing growlers.

Q: When did you start North City Growlers?

A: We launched the business and sold our first growler in October 2014. The idea for North City Growlers came during a family trip to California. We stopped into a small brewery in Cambria and there was this cool jug behind the bar. I asked the owner what it was and he told us all about growlers. We spent the next year talking about potential business ideas to do with growlers and started seriously developing the business in the summer of 2014.

north city growlers 1

Q: Have you always been a craft beer enthusiast or is it something you’ve grown to love?

A: I’ve always loved good beer and have made an attempt to try as many different brands and styles as possible – both at home and especially when traveling. For the longest time, we only had two craft breweries in Winnipeg and I would gravitate to one (Half Pints Brewing). They have 4 or 5 styles throughout the year but continually do small batches of really great beer that is available until they sell out. Beer lovers have to support our craft brewers – not because it’s trendy or cool but because they are creating employment, opportunity and collaboration in our communities. Luckily, the craft beer industry in general has continued to grow leaps and bounds in the last few years and it’s really exciting to be a part of it.

north city growlers 6

Q: Any tips for running your own business and raising a family at the same time?

A: The reception we’ve received to our custom growlers has been beyond our wildest expectations. We opened shop as the growler phenomenon was exploding and our customers have been incredibly supportive. The majority of our growler orders are designed and etched after my wife and I come home from our regular day jobs, play with and feed our 4-year-old and 1 year old, and put them to bed. It can be exhausting, but then we get a message from one of our customers about how much they love their growler or how excited their husband or boyfriend or brother was to receive it as a gift. It may sound cliché, but that puts a smile on my face and helps make all the effort worthwhile.

north city growlers 2

I do most the designing and etching and overall business stuff. My wife provides a sounding board and is the most supportive person on the planet. She takes care of the family, the house and a million other things when I’m busy with orders. Although I’m the face of the business, she is the only reason it is as successful as it is.

We don’t take ourselves too seriously. I mean, we’re talking about big jugs filled with beer. We have a small message at the bottom of our site that says “Shop powered by beer. No really, beer is powering this site”, because right beside the custom growler we’re working on is usually a pint of something that was just poured from one of our (many) growlers.

north city growlers 5

Q: Describe (in simple terms) the steps to make a North City custom growler!

A: We have design templates where customers can customize the text within the template, but we also do fully customized designs. Once an order is received I communicate with the customer to make sure I understand their idea. I then design something and send the customer a proof for their review. Sometimes I get it on the first try and sometimes it takes a little tweaking to match the design with the customer’s idea.

north city growlers 13

All of our products come with unlimited design revisions to make sure the customer is 100% happy with the design. Once approved, I start on etching the growler. The glass and ceramic growlers are etched by hand and the stainless-steel growlers are etched using an automated laser engraver. All the work is done in our home and we’re very proud of the work we do. The customer will always be dealing with me throughout their order and I try and ensure they’re in the loop from the time they submit the order to the time they receive the growler in the mail.

north city growlers 12

I was drawn to Daivin and North City Growlers when I learned about his dedication to the craft beer scene and true love for the industry. As Daivin mentioned, we have to support our craft brewers, not because it’s trendy but because it supports our communities and economy. Not to mention it’s a superior product! A custom growler is the perfect gift for that beer lover in your circle. Impress the hipster girl behind the counter of your local brewery with a custom growler from North City Growlers. Place your order today and enjoy a hand crafted Canadian product made with love!

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – Brix & Mortar

February 2, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Ben McRae

I’m still buzzing from my experience at Brix & Mortar last night! I had been looking forward to trying their Dine Out menu all week and I was blown away. The intoxicating atmosphere infuses your stay as you feel romance in the air. A beautiful place to take someone you’d like to impress.

brix & mortar 2

My wife and I were lucky enough to sit at the bar and soak in the knowledge of Brix’s bar expert Chris Mosey. Like a passionate university student, I literally broke out my note pad to jot down the jewels he was casually dropping. He taught us about Japanese Whiskey, obscure spirits, Belgium beers, and walked us through Brix’s incredible drink list. Just the learning experience was worth the price of admission.

brix & mortar 1

Let the Journey Begin

Brix & Mortar is offering a $40 Dine Out Menu with a $48 upgrade. We opted for one of each as I justified my decadent choice in the name of research! For the appetizers, we had a light and delicious Kale Caesar and I gawked over Brix’s Albacore Tuna Tataki. The Tuna was seared perfectly laying on a bed of pickled cucumber, simply delectable.

brix & mortar 4

Onoda Old Fashioned

Now it was time for Chris to impress us even further with his magical Onoda Old Fashioned. He began this cocktail by lighting a couple cloves of Anise on fire and incasing the smoke with the old-fashioned glass. While the glass was marinating in smoke he began mixing the old fashioned with Suntory Toki Japanese Whiskey, Plum Wine, Smoked Pear Bitters, and Pimento Bitters. The smoked rinse glass added the perfect amount of aromatic flavor for a truly magnificent cocktail!

brix & mortar 8

Enter the Entrees

For our main courses, I went all out and ordered the AAA Hanger Steak served with roasted shallots, baby potato and carrots, and topped with demi-glace. The presentation was only rivaled by the flavor of this immaculate dish.

brix & mortar 7

My wife went for Chris’s recommendation the Grilled Wild Salmon served with warm potato salad (which is phenomenal), garlic aioli. Dungeness crab, and scallions. This dish is on the $40 menu and stole the show. We both agreed it was the best salmon dish we’d ever had!

brix & mortar 6

Big Flavours in Little China

Savouring my delicious steak dinner and taking my time is something I rarely get to do. Brix has that laid-back vibe that encourages you to get lost in the moment and just enjoy. Our masterful mixologist Chris decided to take a walk down the wild side and made us Brix’s legendary Big Flavours In Little China. A magical mixture of Mandarin Vodka, Lychee Liquor, Fresh Lemon, Clove Spiced Pear, and Plumb Bitters. To our surprised the cocktail is served in a Chinese food take out container, hysterical! Love the sense of humor, it shows that although Brix & Mortar is high end and sophisticated the staff and patrons are there to have a good time!

brix & mortar 10

Growing up in a humble setting I never had the chance to experience fine dining. It makes it that much more special for me when I have the honour of enjoying a true culinary experience. Brix’s Dine Out menu is a magnificent example of why Dine Out was started. To give everyone a chance to expand their horizons. Chris Mosey took us on a cocktail journey that inspired and educated and for that I am very thankful. The intoxicating atmosphere, libations, and company made this Dine Out experience one I’ll never forget.

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – The Sandbar

February 2, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Ben McRae

Perched above Granville Island nestled underneath Granville Bridge is where you’ll find Granville Island’s best dining experience. The Sandbar boasts a massive 2 level space equipped with an enclosed heated all-year patio. If you’ve never been before you are seriously missing out. Sandbar’s Dine Out is over on Thursday so get your reservation in and enjoy a beautiful British Columbian experience.

sandbar-7

The Sandbar is offering a steal of a deal with their $30 Dine Out menu. The décor and vibe of The Sandbar is warm and welcoming. You can’t help but enjoy yourself with the view of the city sparkling in the background. We started things off with a Bourbon Sour and a Bloody Mary served with a fresh prawn. The sun was just setting as we cheersed to the last moments of daylight.

Start the Night Right

The Sand Bar’s appetizer options are Clam Chowder, Harvest Salad, or Fish Croquette. We went for the Harvest Salad (roasted beets and yams, brussels sprouts, and candied pecans) and the Fish Croquette (salmon, black cos, tuna, rice, aioli). We were also treated with the Wok Fried Squid which is absolutely delicious! Although it’s not on the menu, if you are ever in you have to try it! The laid back yet attentive service at Sandbar is excellent and you get the feeling that you are cared about and welcomed.

sandbar-1

Freshly Superior

For the main dishes, I went for the Forno Roasted Chicken with a mushroom demi glace. The portion was massive which was amazing as you’ll find some Dine Out’s cut cost with small portion sizes. Not at Sand Bar, the chicken was succulent and the dish was very visually appealing.

sandbar-6

We also had the Bouillabaisse with tomato fennel broth, clams, mussels, fish, prawns, and scallops. A delicious addition to the Dine Out menu and if you’re at Sandbar you have to try the seafood. Sandbar, being known for it’s incredibly fresh local seafood has a fresh sheet that shows you what was brought to the restaurant that morning! How’s that for fresh.

sandbar-5

I loved the fact that Sandbar offers B.C. wine parings for their dishes. I sipped on Quail’s Gate’s Chardonnay and for a moment I was taken back to the vineyard which I’d visited during the summer. Sandbar’s dedication to west coast culinary and locally sourced products make it a must visit for everyone in Vancouver.

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – Bayside Lounge

February 1, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Logan Brown

The legendary Bayside Lounge, affiliated with the Best Western Plus Hotel in the heart of English Bay has been a central beachside dining destination since 1980. Our server, Sue, has worked there for the past 21 years and has seen the venue undergo many changes. Before cell phones, each table had its own phone, making it a popular place for locals to conduct business over lunch or a couple of beverages. Even after having undergone renovations, Bayside Lounge still retains its 80’s cocktail lounge vibe in the best way possible. The room is circular with large bay windows, with the sunken bar situated in the center of the room. My fellow VanCity Drinks correspondent Jenn and I were warmly welcomed and seated at a table with a spectacular view of the water.

bayside lounge 1

Appies

We started our evening with a round of classic cocktails, my guest ordered the Bourbon Sour, complete with a bright maraschino cherry, while I opted for a Negroni. Our appies consisted of crispy polenta fries with a spicy marinara sauce and a beet and burrata salad, a perfect light start so as to not overshadow the substantial entrees we were about to enjoy.

bayside lounge 2

bayside lounge 3

Mains

Both of our entrees were prepared sous-vide style (placed in a vacuum-sealed pouch in temperature-controlled water); I chose the Moroccan lamb chops and my guest had the flank steak pinwheels. The lamb was tender and flavourful, accompanied by gnocchi and grilled fruit from the Okanagan. While getting a photo of her dish, Jenn dropped her phone in her mashed potatoes and fortunately it didn’t affect the flavour one bit! The steak was cooked to perfection and the mashed potatoes were creamy and buttery.

bayside lounge 4

Dessert

Our bellies were feeling pretty full after our delicious meal, but the first rule of Dine Out is to always save room for dessert! I went with the flourless chocolate torte (gluten-free!), which was rich, dense and extremely decadent. My guest went with the enormous peanut butter pie in a cup* (* read: large jar) and even though I graciously assisted in eating, neither of us could finish.

bayside lounge 5

Bayside Lounge did a fantastic job of serving up classic, hearty dishes with a modern twist, paired well with traditional cocktails and a great atmosphere. It was very clear that there was a bumping local scene filled with dedicated regulars, a testament to the timeless status of Bayside Lounge as an English Bay hot spot.

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – Chambar

February 1, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Logan Brown

Having never been to Chambar before (I know, I’m embarrassed too), it was one of my most anticipated spots to hit up for Dine Out 2017. And I’ll tell you right now; it lived up to, and far surpassed the hype. Chambar’s fine dining yet cozy atmosphere perfectly matches their “civilized debauchery” tagline. Our bartender Jim was extremely friendly and courteous, acting as a guide through the dining experience we were about to embark on.

chambar-6

Appies

My dining companion Michelle is vegan (what was I thinking?) however; Chambar was extremely accommodating and able to transform their vegetarian options to meet a vegan’s dietary restrictions. Not only that but they did an excellent job of it. Her dish was Les Crudités, cauliflower, radish and sunchoke with carrot hummus and pickled greens and was light yet extremely flavourful.

chambar-3

I opted for the carnivore route and tried the Bison Fume, a hearty take on a carpaccio with celeriac, fennel and chervil remoulade, smoke tomato aioli, pine nuts and parmesan.

chambar-2

To start our meal we decided on two cocktails, I chose the Toledo Translator with coffee infused tequila and an ice sphere made of Vietnamese coffee, which became sweeter as the sphere melted. My guest had the Persian Imperial fizz, with sparkling wine, brandy and Hennessy, presented beautifully in a champagne flute with an apple fan.

chambar-8

Mains

While my eye was initially drawn to the Elk Meatball, I was torn between that and the Pot au Feu de Poisson, which featured my two favourite vegetables, beets and brussels sprouts. Jim informed me that the meatball was definitely the more hearty of the two, but that the fish had much more of a complex flavour profile. I decided to be a little adventurous and go for the char, and I was not disappointed. The fish was cooked perfectly and the shisho & galangal broth added a sweet tanginess to the dish.

chambar-4

Michelle’s vegan option was the Pastilla, yam, spinach and caramelized onion wrapped in a light phyllo pastry, served with smoky babaganoush lentils.

chambar-5

As our entrees arrived, Jim whipped us up two new cocktails to Chambar’s menu that he thought we would enjoy based on our first choices. He definitely hit the nail on the head, as they were both our favourite drinks of the evening. He offered me the Endymion’s Order, with rum, pineapple and mescal for a smoky finish. Jim informed us that the name is a nod to the HMS Endymion, the last naval ship to ration rum for its crew. Michelle was presented with the El Morocco Deux, another elegant looking cocktail with pineapple, lime and pomegranate juices, cognac and dubonnet, misted with rosewater and garnished with rose petals.

chambar-1

Dessert

After our filling main course, the dessert offerings were nice and light to round off the meal. Michelle was presented a sorbet trio of mango, raspberry and passionfruit, while I tried the Tarte au Citron Vert, an upscale take on a Key Lime pie that really hit the spot.

chambar-7

chambar-9

Ben the Bartender informed me that no trip to Chambar was complete without trying one of their Belgian beers, which are shipped from Belgium 3-4 times a year, with the list changing every few weeks based on how popular certain beers are. After a round of cold ones, Jim offered us a digestif as a nightcap. My experience at Chambar was one I will not soon forget, the warm and friendly staff, delicious food and drink and the expertly curated vibe all came together to create a unique and memorable dining experience.

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – Big Rock Urban

January 31, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Ben McRae

Dine Out Vancouver continues with a stop at Big Rock Urban Eatery. Located on 4th and Alberta. Big Rock is a prominent member of this emerging craft beer oasis. Sprinkled throughout this industrial area you will find local craft beer contributors that are pushing the boundaries as far as the brewing and dining experience goes.

Big Rock Urban Eatery has an incredible space equipped with a massive dining hall, cozy lounge, and a stage for all to see. I was very impressed with the size of the space as I’m always frustrated in the lack of seating in Vancouver. Just imagine, a place you can walk into without a reservation with a group of people and the host won’t laugh at you! What a concept, Big Rock you’re doing it right.

big-rock-urban-1

Time to Dine

This $20 Dine Out Menu offering was a pleasant surprise. A brewery with a full kitchen? Where am I, Portland? Kudos again Big Rock. We kicked things of with fresh and delicious Albacore Tuna Tartar and their fondue inspired Brewer’s Bagel. Pair that with two flights sampling their entire beer list and we were on our way to a great night. For the main course we had the Pulled Pork Ciabatta and the Dine Out Pizza with dried tomato, Kalamata olives, shaved asparagus, and goat cheese, served with a stout balsamic drizzle, quite delicious.

big-rock-urban-4

Cheers!

The place was bustling as we admired the floor-to-ceiling glass wall which gives you and insider look into their beautiful brewery. A class of future brewers were getting a tour as the dining hall was filling up with a painting work shop. Loved the energy and dynamic as everyone was having a good time. Also loved the fact that there is a full-service bar just in case you wanted a cocktail or glass of wine!

Big rock Urban Eatery is definitely pushing the boundaries of what a micro-brewery can offer. Check out this budding scene in Vancouver and make sure you pop in for Happy Hour. 3-6pm every day and 9pm-Close Sunday to Thursday for $4 beers, $6 wine, and $5 snacks!

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – TAPshack Eatery

January 31, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Ben McRae

It’s been over 5 years since I officially began covering Vancouver’s food and beverage scene. My partner in Crime Wes the Waiter shared my love for finding awesome deals at cool spots around town. We started with note pads and a twitter account and now have expanded with a multi-media platform known as VanCity Drinks. Being one of the founders does have its perks. I look forward to the end of January every year as I cover Dine Out Fest Vancouver!

Enter TAPshack

Dine Out is one of the best times of the year as Vancouver establishments offer three course meals at a hell of a discount. I had the pleasure of trying out Vancouver’s newly branded TAPshack Eatery formerly known as the Pirate Pub. Located on Vancouver’s breathtaking seawall directly under Burrard Bridge, The TAPshack boasts a magnificent view of Granville Island and False Creek.

tapshack-burrard-6

I first discovered this oasis while rollerblading the seawall (I’m not ashamed). It’s a perfect spot to cool down and enjoy some west coast dining after trekking around the seawall. The staff is always welcoming as the beautiful view keeps spirits high. Currently, TAPshack is offering a $20 three course Dine Out menu that will leave you satisfied. I popped in for a Sunday Funday to watch some football, sip on a caesar and try it out.

tapshack-burrard-3

Let’s Eat

We started with the Mushroom soup which was delicious as well as a green salad because I’ve been covering Dine Out all week and I needed some veggies! For the main courses, I went for the fire roasted Margherita Pizza as well as the Craft Beer Bratwurst. First time I had seen a Bratwurst on a Dine Out so I had to try it. Stout-poached bratwurst, crispy onions, pale ale mustard, brioche bun, and beer and cheddar sauce accompanied by cole-slaw. Just the type of comfort food I needed, goodbye hangover!

tapshack-burrard-4

tapshack-burrard-2

TAPshack is an awesome spot to watch the game with Happy Hour everyday 4-6pm and 8pm-Close. For all you football lovers $5 pints of Phillips all day Sunday! I am a huge craft beer lover and supporter which is why I must salute TAPshack. Their dedication to supporting B.C.’s bursting beer scene fills me with patriotism and of course delicious beer! Next time your cruising the seawall stop by and stay a while!
