Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – Sai Woo

January 26, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Josh McRae

Located in historic Chinatown, Sai Woo showcases asian cuisine paired with unique craft cocktails.  Their Dine Out menu offers a choice of 3 appetizers, 3 mains, and 2 desserts for $40.  You’ll love the locally sourced ingredients and adventurous menu.  It’s almost hidden away on chaotic Pender street, but once inside, you are greeted by 16ft ceilings with exposed brick walls from the early 1900’s.  Salli, the owner, showed us what the original building looked like pre-restoration.  Her and her team stripped layers and layers of drywall to unearth the building’s natural beauty and heritage.  Sai Woo is a perfectly intimate setting to enjoy some delicious eats.

Asian Casual Eats

The meal commenced with a grilled romaine kimchi salad and a Korean beef tenderloin yukkae.  The latter was a decadent take on beef tartare with an egg yolk to tie everything together.

Paired with the appetizers was Sai Woo’s most infamous cocktail, The Smoking Gun. Dark rum is combined with bitters, sugar, and oak and then infused with tea smoke.  Dave the bartender served it table side as we were mesmerized by the “magic” that was happening in front of us.  This cocktail was a real highlight of the meal and one of the finest cocktails I’ve had.

On to the Next

Our server, Jake, brought the main courses in a flourish of beautifully plated entrees.  The Cantonese style garlic prawns delivered bite after delicious bite with garlic flavours shining through.  It was nested on top of a sweet and spicy bok choi and gai lan medley.

The Szechuan veal cheeks were perfectly tender and melted with flavour.  The cauliflower puree and vegetables were quickly devoured as we couldn’t get enough of this dish.

sai-woo-10

We sipped the elegant Anna May cocktail garnished with a blueberry as well as the refreshing Chinatown Mule with Jack Daniels and Ginger Beer.  We felt at ease as we finished the last bites and took in the ambience.

Sweet Finale

This journey of asian cuisine ended with a matcha coconut panna cotta that tasted as exotic as it sounds alongside their interpretation of nama chocolate.  A richly smooth chocolate and cream with a truffle-like texture, it was garnished with a yuzu curd and crispy puffed rice to add dimension.

Sai Woo’s Dine Out menu was an adventurous journey that paid homage to its heritage building and vibrant neighbourhood.  The creative cocktails and stunning backdrop brought the cuisine to life.  We would quickly return for dinner or a seat at the bar.  #DoYouSaiWoo

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – The Butcher & Bullock

January 25, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Jenn Ly

It’s a Saturday night during the first week of Dine Out Vancouver and my first stop is a downtown after work favourite The Butcher & Bullock. The first sense upon entering The Butcher & Bullock is the casual atmosphere. If you’re a sports fanatic then look no further, this restaurant pub has no shortage of televisions playing all different sports available alongside a large screen projector. It is in the financial district of downtown Vancouver and next to a Holiday Inn making it the perfect watering hole for those looking for a laid back hang out for any time during the day. Adding to its laid back atmosphere is their selection of games. Pool, pinball, darts and even Skee-Ball! There’s no wonder this place was packed as the night progressed.

The pub itself is self-seating but upon entering we were promptly greeted and taken to our reserved table. Right away I noticed an array of cards placed on the table advertising their themed nights of the week such as trivia night on Tuesdays or $6 wings and $5 beers on Wednesdays. Along with those cards is their cocktail feature of the week. That week’s feature was called “Measure for Measure”, a mix of Glory Juice Co.’s #18 (notes of ginger and lemongrass) and tequila. The GM, Brett, warmly greeted us and was happy enough to have been along side us during our entire Dine Out experience.

But First, Refreshments

To start our night, we decided on two of their exclusively made cocktails. I was instantly drawn to their first option “Rose All Day”. My first sip took me back to the warm days of summer sitting on a patio with notes of watermelon, basil and mint. My friend had the “P.S. I Love You” and upon receiving this drink, Brett excitedly explained the gin used in this drink as a classic west coast gin distilled by Phillips right here in B.C.

Let the Feast Begin

For our first course, I had the chopped winter salad and my friend had the wild mushroom chowder paired with their wine suggestions. Brett was thrilled to fill us in that the chopped winter salad was going to be a regular item on their menu, something that I will definitely return for as the flavours blended beautifully together. A bite of salad and a sip of soup, our taste buds were eager for more.

butcher & bullock 4

I chose to go with their Shepherd’s Pie and was eager to dig into it even before I sat down for the night. A mix of lamb as well as beef to take away from the gamey taste of the lamb filled the dish. The beautiful gravy and the smooth mashed potatoes on top did not leave me unsatisfied. The second entrée chosen was the Butchers Rib Roll along side a generous amount of French fries. The meat was tender mixed with house pickles inside a soft roll with a little spicy flare.

And for Dessert

To end our meal was a fresh baked double chocolate brownie and a poached peach tres leches. Both were topped with a whipped cream creating a well-balanced dessert. Just as we thought our night was over, Brett kindly brought over two glasses of Fernet Branca, “The Bartenders Handshake”, an Italian digestive bitter with a similar taste to Jägermeister. It soothed our throats and warmed our now full bellies.

butcher & bullock 7

The hospitality shown to us by Brett and the staff left me wanting more of Butchers & Bullocks, and with their Dine Out menu at $20 is an absolute steal! If you’ve been there before for a beer or their cocktails try out their food menu, it won’t leave you disappointed. When you’re done your meal and looking for a place to hang out, look no further as they even provide you games!

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – Joe Fortes

January 23, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Ben McRae

Dine Out Vancouver is underway and what better way to celebrate than enjoying a gourmet meal at one of Vancouver’s most legendary restaurants, Joe Fortes! I am a huge fan of Joe Fortes casual fine dining atmosphere and of course their west coast inspired menu. As a bartender in Vancouver for the past 8 years, whenever I’m asked by a tourist where to have a memorable meal, Joe Fortes is my first suggestion.

joe fortes 7

Located in the heart of downtown, Joe Fortes is always bustling with a mix of locals and tourists. The classic decor and upscale touches makes Fortes the perfect spot to impress that special someone. My wife and I were lucky enough to experience Joe Fortes $40 Dine Out menu with cocktail parings designed by our master server Richard.

Can’t Miss Appetizers

We kicked things of with their famous lobster infused oil and bread and were treated with candied salmon with a lemon crème fresh. Pair that with Fortes’ signature Caesar and we had the recipe of what would turn into a beautiful night.

joe fortes 1

Joe Fortes Dine Out menu offers your choice of three different appetizers, New England Clam Chowder, Beet & Tomato salad, and Albacore Tuna Crudo. We chose the Beet & Tomato salad with ricotta Chantilly which was rich and delicious. As well as the Albacore Crudo which was the perfect appetizer served with the freshest tuna cuts I’ve ever had!

joe fortes 2

High-End Entrées

The main courses that Fortes offers makes their $40 Dine Out menu an absolute steal. I went for the Sockeye Salmon served on a bed of spiced barley risotto with roasted vegetables. My wife ordered the New York Steak served with balsamic braised mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Our masterful server Richard, paired the steak with an Agave Old Fashioned made with Cazadores Anejo tequila which was unique and matched perfectly. The Salmon was paired with a refreshing Basil Bomb made with fresh basil, limoncello, and prosecco.

joe fortes 4

joe fortes 5

Sitting in Joe Fortes, listening to the live pianist and soaking in the classic atmosphere is one of the best Vancouver dining experiences in my opinion. Fortes has a way of being upscale yet welcoming and casual. The perfect balance of high end service paired with gourmet food is why Joe Fortes is my favorite place to go for a date night.

joe fortes 8

The food at Joe Fortes is amazing and a testament to Fortes’ dedication to gourmet cooking. I am lucky that I get the opportunity to experience it and during Dine Out you can too! Dine Out gives everyone a chance to try restaurants that you may have been intimidated by. The $40 Dine Out menu at Joe Fortes is a must visit and you still have time, don’t miss out!

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2017 – Timber

January 19, 2017/in Uncategorized /by Ben McRae

Dine Out Vancouver Festival is a mere two days away and what better way to kick things off than an exclusive Dine Out tasting at one of Vancouver’s emerging bars, Timber. Located on the corner of Robson and Jervis, Timber boasts a beautiful space with floor to ceiling windows, an excellent craft beer list and savoury Canadian comfort food. Timber pays tribute to B.C.’s rich timber history and the beauties who built our beautiful province. Finally, an oasis for me to hide out and avoid one of my least favourite things in the world, being dragged down Robson Street to window shop!

Bon Appétit

I had the pleasure of dining and drinking until my heart’s content last night as the fine staff at Timber introduced their unique and innovative Dine Out Menu! My brother and I set up shop at the bar as our bartender Pascal took us on a cocktail journey that paired beautifully with every course. We started things of with two Smokehouse caesars which included tequila, IPA mustard, tabasco, Walter Clamato, and the kicker smoked sea water! This Caesar was one of the best I’ve ever had and believe me I’ve had my fair share. The first course, a local kale and romaine salad with roasted squash tossed in a maple vinaigrette. A nice way to ease into what would turn out to be a decadent affair.

Bison Sirloin & French 75 Cocktail

Timber is serving up a different main course every night of the week during Dine Out and we were lucky enough to try three delicious mains. The first, three hearty strips of bison sirloin served with roasted Brussels sprouts. This dish made your mouth water just looking at it and tasted even better! Our man Pascal paired this dish with his rugged take on the famous French 75 cocktail. Buffalo trace bourbon, champagne, honey, garnished with a blood orange slice, simply delicious!

timber-restaurant-5

Lamb Meatloaf & Tree Planter Cocktail

Up next, a lamb meatloaf served in a piping hot skillet with mashed potatoes paired with the cocktail that stole the show. The Tree Planter is one of Timber’s signature cocktails which is masterfully crafted and delectable on the palate. Gin based with fresh squeezed lime, whisky bitters and spruce tip syrup. Chef Chris Whittaker hand picks local spruce tips and boils them down to make his very own syrup. The passion for locally made in house ingredients shines through while sipping this divine cocktail. I highly recommend you try it.

timber-restaurant-6

Bison & Elk Meat Pie With Marrow

The last course, a bison and elk meat pie with marrow. This dish’s presentation was only matched by its delectable flavours. The staff couldn’t help but crowd around and marvel as we dug into this unique and delicious dish. I loved trying elk for the first time as was surprised to find it very flavourful without being heavy. This dish is offered on Wednesdays during Dine Out and absolutely worth trying.

timber-restaurant-4

After taking some time to reflect on the three main courses, I must say that the Timber’s dedication to using locally sourced products as well as making mostly everything in house makes their $20 Dine Out menu an unbelievable steal. The space is welcoming with a relaxed vibe and is great place to watch the game. Next time you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Robson Street you know where to go. Timber’s Dine Out Menu runs from Jan. 20th – Feb. 5th so don’t miss your chance on one of Vancouver’s best deals!

Strathcona Beer Company

December 10, 2016/in Uncategorized /by Logan Brown

The first thing that catches your eye when you walk through the front doors of Strathcona Beer Co. is the word “Community” spelled out in gold neon. This represents the connection that Tim Knight, Adrian McInnes and Michael Nazarec have to the Stratchona neighbourhood. Strathcona is Vancouver’s oldest residential area, founded back when New West was the capital and before Vancouver became the vibrant city it is today. So, it would only make sense to establish a local brewery in the heart of our rapidly expanding metropolitan area.

strathcona beer co

Strathcona Beer Co.

On our tour of the brewery and tasting room, we first met with Adrian McInnes — who acts as the brand manager for Strathcona. Quickly scanning the space, you can see that he’s clearly great at his job. From the tasting trays shaped like vintage skateboards, to the streetwear inspired merch area, the brand’s look is cohesive and effortlessly cool. It took some real professional restraint not to cop one of the 5 panel hats then and there.

strathcona beer co

Adrian then introduced us to Michael “Fezz” Nazarec, a long-time homebrewer who recently turned his hobby into a full time job. He stresses classic, international beers and promotes the Dark Mild, the Belgian Gold Ale and the British IPA as their flagship brews. You would imagine its difficult for a new brewery to stand out amongst the competition, especially in the East Van area, but Strathcona stresses quality. They aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel, just create good tasting beer that honours the traditional recipes.

strathcona beer co

Fezz acknowledges a shift in the consumer, and says “People know beer now”. While the average joe was once content walking into a bar for a pint of Coors Light, many people now are able to confidently ask for the latest rotating tap, or know that they have a penchant for a crisp, hoppy IPA. Even my own father will regularly send me photos of a tasting flight from the newest brewery to pop up back east.

World Class Brewery

strathcona beer co

The times are changing, and Strathcona caters to the craft connoisseur in search of a quality brew.  Fezz talks excitedly about upcoming projects, including a Belgian double (their Christmas beer), a smoked porter in the new year, a white IPA, rye ESB and a radler for the spring and line of kettle sours aged in Okanagan oak barrels should be finished the aging process in about a year from now.

strathcona beer co

President Tim Knight built the space from the ground up. He designed an Instagram-ready tasting room with an industrial yet sleek vibe. Concrete bar and family style table tops with black leather and wood seating line the space to maximize socializing. If you’re on the go and don’t have time to stop in for a pint, Strathcona has you covered with growler fills and a cooler stocked full of bottled beers. And of course, nothing pairs better with a cold one than a delicious warm pizza from the full service kitchen.

strathcona beer co

Yeast Vancouver

strathcona beer co

Strathcona joins the ranks of the established “Yeast Van” family, adding yet another tasting room to this local pub-crawl.  They really embody the neighbourhood, so much so that each of their 5000 litre tanks are named after a major street (Union, Prior, etc.). Tim owns a house just two blocks south of the brewery, making for a pretty reasonable morning commute. Fezz mentions that they’ve received an outpouring of local support, and that the brewing scene is much more of akin to family than competitors.

Strathcona Beer Co. is a welcome addition to the Vancouver craft brewery scene. Do yourself a favour and stop by this local hotspot that’s bringing the community vibe back to the place where Vancouver got its start.

Best of B.C. – Summerhill Pyramid Winery

November 29, 2016/in Uncategorized /by Ben McRae

I recently had the pleasure and privilege of visiting Summerhill Pyramid Winery located in Kelowna. I bashfully admit I am a newcomer to the Okanagan Wine scene, but after a summer tour I was hooked. For some reason, I had it in my mind that all the wineries would be an hour outside the city down some sketchy unlit country road. To my surprise, the complete opposite. Most of the wineries are mingled in with communities with breath taking views surrounding Okanagan Lake. Realizing I was a naive Vancouverite, I decided to take another trip up to Kelowna and fully experience the magic of Summerhill Pyramid Winery for our monthly “Best of B.C.” travel feature.

Summerhill Pyramid Winery

summerhill-winery-2

Summerhill Winery is an award winning Organic Winery with Biodynamic certification. As our wine tour guide Harry told us, it would take an entire day to explain all the stipulations that a winery must adhere to before they were deemed a biodynamic organic winery, but I think I got the gist of it. The highlights of being a certified organic winery consist of the absence of pesticides and growing grapes in a completely natural setting. Summerhill Winery dedicates a portion of their acreage as a nature reserve that goes untouched by humans. There is an underlying dedication to working with nature as opposed to working against it. Founder, Stephen Cipes believes that by growing grapes in their natural setting you truly get the characteristics of the region. How’s that for drinking local!

Tour & Tasting

summerhill-winery-3

Our tour and tasting began with the popping of Canada’s most celebrated sparkling wine, Cipes Brut.  The bubbles were flowing as we made our way to the biggest surprise of the night.  In 1997, founder Stephen Cipes constructed a true Pyramid on the grounds with the exact dimensions of the very top of the Great Pyramid! We felt honoured as the doors were opened and we were taken up the eerie steps into the heart of the Pyramid. There is a calm inside the Pyramid that is noticeable and refreshing. I felt a warm glowing energy growing inside me. I wasn’t sure if that was the sparkling wine setting in, or if there was some magic in this structure. Our guide explained that the Pyramid is meant to amplify your mood whether it is good or bad. I was feeling good and my spirits were rising. The walls were lined with cases as all of Summerhill’s wine as all of their wine spend time in the Pyramid as they receive their ancient blessing before being enjoyed. An eccentric twist which adds to the allure of their products. Feeling charged up we headed back to the winery for a tasting to remember!

summerhill-winery-7

We were given the star treatment as our knowledgeable wine Sharman Harry spared no expense by uncorking vintage after vintage. Summerhill Pyramid Winery is known for their sparkling wines and their 20yr old Cipes Traditional Cuvee 1996 is a celebration in a bottle, boasting rich notes of ginger and lime. As a red wine lover, I was seduced by the 2012 ‘Om’ Organic Meritage. Inspired by the perfect conditions in 2012 for growing Cabernet Franc grapes, this meritage blend is silky and delicious. Last but not least, we tried Summerhill’s premium 2012 Zweigelt Ice Wine bursting with notes of strawberry and dried cranberry with a long luxurious finish. With our minds full of knowledge and our bodies full of wine we were ready for the highlight of the night, Chef Alex Lavroff’s culinary journey.

Sunset Bistro

summerhill-winery-6

We enjoyed the anticipation of our upcoming dishes in the cozy setting of the Sunset Organic Bistro. Overlooking the Okanagan Lake, the Sunset Bistro is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or an intimate night with friends. Their menu is locally sourced with produce coming from their own actual farm! Chef Alex Lavroff greeted us and to our delight told us he would be creating his own Omakase dinner experience for us. Omakase, is when the chef creates his own, off the menu dishes, course by course. The first dish was a tenderloin tar tar that would leave a foodie speechless. Up next, crab cakes on a bed of Israeli Couscous with a parsley puree, amazing! This paired beautifully with Summerhill’s Organic Riesling as we toasted to the good life. The most impressive dish was our main course that Chef Lavroff personally presented while the other tables looked on with envy. He hand-picked a small pumpkin from their organic garden and stuffed it with scallops, prawns, salmon, and mussels. Then proceeded to roast it for several hours. The result, a mouth-watering dish bursting with flavour. I don’t think my wife and I spoke during this dish as we were consumed by foodie reverie. Bravo Chef, bravo!

summerhill-winery-8

summerhill-winery-9

summerhill-winery-10

Community of Innovators

The combination of inventive dishes paired with complimentary varietals was an experience I will never forget. Summerhill’s dedication to growing their own products from grapes to produce shines through the entire experience. I hear a lot of talk about the evils of consumerism and how it has changed the food industry into a heartless machine. If you find yourself feeling down about this sad scenario, a visit to Summerhill Pyramid Winery is what you need! You will see that there are still people actively breaking ground and proving that we can live in a mutual beneficial relationship with nature and enjoy the fruits while were at it. As our generous host, Paul LaGrange explained, the Summerhill employees are more like a community of innovators that are working with the same belief. Getting back to our roots by living with the land and providing sustainable wine that you can feel good about drinking. Next time you are in the mood for celebrating, pick up a bottle of Cipes Brut and pop the cork and experience the magic of Summerhill’s wine!
